Your life is your poem

I was asked if I write poetry. "Yes." I responded.

I've been writing poetry since I was about twelve. I never cared to share my poetry thoughts with anyone because I simply wrote them for myself.

Poetry, like books, saved me more than once.

I think that most people cringe at the thought of poetry because they think that it needs to be understood and interpreted into prose. This is not so. Poetry is personal and deep and moving and inspiring and heartbreaking all at once.

It can be simple or long or short or complicated. It can be anything you want it to be because your thoughts and your emotions are what makes it breathe.

Breathe. Life. Into Poetry.

I resort to poetry during random moments, overwhelming moments, silent or alone moments and even moments that I'm afraid to one day forget.

We all have a story. Whether we choose to share it or not is a personal matter. Oftentimes, while in deep thought or reflective moments, I hear myself thinking in poetry. My thoughts form like stanzas and repetitive verses or occasionally rhyme without intending to.

Some call poetry a form of therapy. Others see it for simple creative beauty or a small crevice into the mind of a person or poet.

For me, poetry is my life. It's your life. It encompasses all the beautiful, the ugly, the mundane, the magical, the inspiring, the wonder, the happiness, the sadness and so much more that we feel, experience, see or imagine.

Your life is your poem. Write it.

My girl, one day...

My girl, she carries her little heart on her sleeve.

One day, she'll carry her heart to her first love.

My girl, she illustrates her emotions with fine lines and colored pencils.

One day, she'll sketch a drawing for her lover with oil pastels.

My girl, she feels deep empathy for those in need.

One day, she'll hold her hand out to help the elderly.

My girl, she speaks truth and her voice echos like a symphony.

One day, she'll stand before crowds of people and inspire peace and love.

My girl, she can gather the authentic nature of individuals.

One day, she'll embrace those that share a common love with her.

My girl, she is my mirror and my teacher.

One day, she'll learn what I have learned from being her mother,

and she'll see the wonder that she cultivated in me...

Reflection of labor: A Sonnet

My first Sonnet (2007)

In 2007, while in graduate school, I took a class in poetry.  Not only was the class required for my degree, it was the first time I had ever had to share my poetry with an entire class.  I was nervous and skeptical most of the time but my professor, Frank Montesonti, was encouraging and brilliant in his guidance and own poetry as well.  Thank you, Frank!

Nevertheless, I wrote my first Sonnet during the course.  Poetry is a secret love of mine and I often revert to in times of deep reflection and insight.  This sonnet is a reflection of my labor with my second daughter, Luna.  I dedicate it to my wonderful midwife, Sheila.  It was my first home water birth and it changed me.  I honor the power of birth...

Sage Femme

I must wait for present to become past
As the wind blows and I watch the heavy showers
The day becomes dim and the skies overcast
My body takes over and I begin to fall
I tumble into the land that they call ‘out there’
Time is still and meditation takes over
The only breath that I can watch
Blowing like daisies from my mouth
My full womb is saying nothing but ‘surges’
The pain is like watching the departure of birds
They come and they go and they sing
I chant ‘let it go’ and ‘let it be’—
‘let it go’ and ‘let it be’—
I must be patient and the patient
That does not watch the wall clock
In this meditative hour—
I trust the process…
And the sage femme simply waits.

(for EJ)

Only if...
If you were yarn, I'd weave you into a beautiful scarf and then you'd always keep me warm...

If you were a button, I'd sew you to my favorite blouse and then you'd always keep me from falling apart...

If you were shoelaces, I'd thread you into my toughest sneakers and then you'd always keep me grounded...

If you were reading glasses, I'd wear you even if I didn't need to and then you'd always help me to see things for what they are...

If you were a linen cloth, I'd fold you neatly, tuck you into my purse and take you out in moments of joy or sadness because then you'd always dry my tears...

If you were a gentle breeze, I'd stand outside and wait for you to caress my cheek, like a wisp of hair and then you'd always remind me of the simple yet beautiful things in life...

If you were a rain droplet, I'd hold my hand out and allow you to fall into my open palm and then you'd always know that I too could catch you when you fall...

If you were a fallen leaf, I'd gently pick you up off the ground, tuck you into my favorite novel and then every time I'd open that book, you'd allow me to remember that you were once a beautiful, vibrant and living treasure...

If there were one thing that I no longer had to wish for, it would be to wish for you... because you see, you are all of my dreams, desires, joys and all the mundane in between...I love you more and more each day...
