{Spanish} sucks Yo!

Scenario: A father is with his little daughter (around 3 years old) at the book store.  The little girl is bringing her daddy books for him to read to her.  All of the books are in Español (Spanish).  Spanish books seem to be her choice today.

Little girl:  Hands her daddy a board book.

Dad: 'Oh this book is in Spanish sweetie.  Are you sure you want for me to read this one?'

Little girl:  Sits beside him on a miniature bench.

Dad:  'The books you want me to read are over there.' He says as he points in another direction.

Little girl:  Gets up and picks out another book.  Another book in the same 'spanish' section.

Dad: 'Sweetie, this book is not English.  I think you want for me to read an English book to you.'

Little girl:  Looks at him as if she were saying 'shut up and read the damn 'Spanish' book!

Dad:  Opens up the book. 'Vamos a cocinar una tortilla. (Let's cook a spanish omlette)'  He CAN read in Spanish.  Actually, he CAN speak Spanish.  Then he stops reading and insists once again.

Little girl:  Gets up and walks over to the 'English' books section and brings one back.

Dad:  Starts reading the 'English' book.

Little girl:  Grabs the book away from her Dad and says 'No, too much English.' and takes the book back.

My POV:

I sat back listening to this parent and little child exchange and watched how this father completely diverted his little girl AWAY from the Spanish books.  Clearly, this father did NOT want his daughter to hear, speak or learn Spanish.  Wah???  I mean really, what was wrong with this dude?  His little girl was eager and curious to listen to something other than English.  The interesting part was that the father WAS able to read AND speak Spanish.  I don't get it.  What was the problem?  He was kind of saying 'Spanish sucks yo so don't waste your time?'

Right?

I cannot fathom a parent NOT wanting their child to learn a foreign language especially if they already speak one themselves.  Huh???

I was born in the United States.  My mother was born in the United States.  My father was raised (somewhat) in the United States.  My husband was born in El Salvador but came to the States when he was around 8 years old (1978) and ONLY spoke Spanish when he arrived.  He learned to speak fluent English within 2 months, yes, 2 months.

When our first daughter was born I made it a POINT to ONLY speak to her in Spanish.  Why?  Because I want my child to be multilingual.  I'm bilingual (Yes, I speak fluent Spanish).  I was not raised speaking Spanish but I made it a POINT to learn it and learn it well when I was 16 years old.  Why?  Because it's important to me.  Both my parents speak Spanish, as well as, the majority of the people in my immediate family.  My husband speaks, reads and writes fluently in 4 languages (English, Spanish, French & Italian) and is getting closer to German now (no I'm not gloating, I'm stating a fact.)  He's a language freak but nevertheless, I do admire his passion.  I'm learning French (here and there).  I suck at staying on track with it though.

I still speak to my girls in Spanish.  I make them repeat phrases, sentences, read in spanish, and make them simply TRY.  They 'prefer' to speak English.  They pout and make faces when I ask them to respond to me in Spanish but I continue to do it no matter what.  I KNOW that it will only benefit them in the future.  They understand it PERFECTLY but are lazy about using it.  It's still my responsibility to instill, engage and teach it to them.  Period.

What is your take on teaching your child or children a foreign language?  Do you speak a foreign language? If so, how do you incorporate it into your child's life?  Please, tell me your thoughts.

Gracias amigos y familia!

Insane Mama {Asylum style}

I've never shared this tid bit about myself but here goes...I'm a member of the Insanity Asylum people.

No silly, I'm not a cuckoo! But that's completely subjective.  You know, the Beachbody workouts!

Back in March of this year I started the first round of many workouts with Beachbody.  I took on the 90 day challenge of P90X and got spectacular results.  It was not easy but it got progressively better.  My experience proved that when you have serious follow through, it gets you the results you want.

P90X Week 1 (Day 1) Starting weight: 152 lbs.

Here are my results!

P90X Week 12 (Day 6) Weight: 132
I lost 20 lbs in 12 weeks! I also gained tone and muscle.

After this  round of P90X, I took a week off and then started Insanity: The Asylum.  It's a 30 day challenge at high intensity.  My schedule got side tracked on week 3 of IA and I'd end up playing catch up.  But I continued with my workouts.  Then I inevitably got the flu and was workout-less for about 3 weeks.  I hated being so sick! It bummed me out, big time.  After I recovered from the flu and then sinusitis and later a hacking dry cough, I simply gave myself a flu recovery week as well.  I didn't want to push myself to the point of lowering my defenses again.

Please tell us how in the world do you find time to workout?
First, I dislike Gym's.  Second, I homeschool.  Third, I prefer working out in the comfort of my home.  Lastly, I make the time no-matter-what.  Working out is to me like what bold coffee is to a sleep deprived parent.  I cannot function well without it and I fucking love it! Now, there are days when the girls drive me insane but I know that I'll be all the better for it if I release my overwhelmed energy by working out.  But overall, I'm COMMITTED.  Period.

Today, I was finally able to jump back into the game and start my 30 day Insanity: The Asylum challenge.  I was blown away with my muscle memory and my body's ability to start back up without struggling after 3 weeks of nothing!

Here are some sneak peeks at my workouts
Warning: Viewer exhaustion advised

Below was on 8/15/11: In and Out Ab Progression

Day 1: Here I am on 9/26/11 doing 'bear crawls'.  This move has a weird name and I probably look weird crawling toward the screen too.

Also 9/26/11...(one of the last sets.  Whew! I was spent!)

So here's to Day 1 of my exercise challenge! I'll post more before and after pics of this insane workout.

Rio {rendition}

My little Kalina has her own rendition of the 'Rio' movie song.

Mama translation:  'All the birds of a feather....Riiiio, riiiio, riiiio' 'Mommy, Rio is not working!'

Chocolate pudding.

Yum.

The Marshmallow Project:

  • box of flat toothpicks (less prickly)
  • curious little fingers
  • lot's of giggles
  • estimated 'focus time': 25 minutes

Luna & Sabrina's, respectively

{Disney} plus three girls

My husband had a grand idea:

He said, 'Let's take Luna to Disney for her 6th birthday instead of spending the money on a party and all that work for you.'

and I said, 'Fabulous!'

That was it.  I loved his idea and I was actually happy to not have to put another party together.  Don't get me wrong, I love, love, love creating and decorating and baking and really getting into my girls' birthday parties.  It's fun and exhausting and wonderful overall.  Really.  It is!

We decided to keep it as a secret surprise for the girls.  We figured that if we'd tell them before, the excitement just wouldn't be the same.  We were so glad we waited.

Off we went.  To Disney.  The Magic Kingdom.  We hadn't taken the girls to Disney since, uh...2009.  Kalina was way too young to even remember it (less than 2 years old).  This time, we were actually really excited about their reaction, you know, because they're older now!

Several days before our big Disney adventure, I got sick.  No, really sick.  Super. Duper. Sick.  A flu.  Blah.  It was terrible.  I almost cancelled the entire thing until I found out that I would not get a full refund for our pre-booked hotel.  Poor Sabrina got sick the night we arrived.  She woke up the next day (the big day) congested and feverish but there was no turning back now.

I find myself chuckling at what we parents are reduced to for the sake of an exciting thrill.  But hey, when it comes to your kids, 'prepare to be amazed' is a serious understatement.

The news captured in our hotel room

Sick or not, Sabrina was excited.  Although she looks pretty calm in the video, she was really psyched!

You can see how excited the other two were.

Hubby and I were relishing in their reaction.  These are the best moments of parenting...the excitement, the wonder, the pure joy in your child's face and voice and uncontrollable jumping up and down, jumping up and down, jumping up and down...these are the moments that stay seared in your memory...forever...
